What is net metering and how does it work?

Net metering is a billing program that helps you save money by crediting you for the excess electricity your solar system sends to the grid. When your system produces more energy than you need, those extra kilowatts don’t go to waste—they help lower your future electricity costs.

How Net Metering Works

Daytime
When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home is using, the extra energy is sent to the utility grid. You earn energy credits for this surplus.

Nighttime
When your solar system isn’t generating electricity—like at night—you draw power from the grid. The credits you earned earlier are applied to reduce or offset the cost of this usage.

Key Points to Know

  • Credits: The value of your solar credits depends on your utility provider. In some regions, you receive credit at the full retail rate; in others, the rate may be reduced.

  • Billing: You only pay for the net amount of energy you use (energy drawn from the grid minus the energy you’ve exported).

  • Benefits: Net metering can significantly reduce your energy bill—and if you generate more than you use over time, you might carry forward credits for future billing periods.
